Today the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough announced $114,196 in grants to 17 local charities responding to COVID-19. These grants are part of an ongoing partnership with Community Foundations of Canada, United Way Centraide Canada and the Canadian Red Cross – with funding provided by the Government of Canada’s $350M Emergency Community Support Fund (#ECSFund).

Canadian charities and non-profit organizations play a vital role in our communities and continue to do so in the face of real challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our government is pleased to support these organizations through the Emergency Community Support Fund so that they can continue to help the most vulnerable members of our communities during these difficult times.

Ahmed Hussen

Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, Government of Canada

This national effort is a second round of funding that aims to support vulnerable populations disproportionately affected by COVID-19.

The Prime Minister of Canada initially announced the #ECSFund on April 21, 2020. It is part of a broad series of emergency response measures by the Government of Canada. A first round of funding was disbursed through the community foundation network across Canada in May, June and July. At that time, the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough awarded $318,230 to 23 organizations across the greater Peterborough area.

At Community Foundations of Canada, our purpose to ‘relentlessly pursue a future where everyone belongs’ has never felt more important.

We’re grateful for the leadership of local community foundations like Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough, who have been at the forefront of local response efforts since the pandemic was declared. Thanks to the Government of Canada’s renewed contribution, those efforts will continue and unlock even more support for organizations on the front lines. Our goal is to ensure that no one is left behind.

#COVID19 is affecting communities across Canada differently, with some populations experiencing increased vulnerability.

Our government will be there to do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, to support Canadians through this difficult time.

That includes supporting organizations that play an essential role delivering services that the most vulnerable in our community rely on. Through the Emergency Community Support Fund, the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough and United Way Peterborough & District have delivered more than $930,000 towards local organizations caring for our neighbours in their hour of need.
