Bill Lockington: A Lifelong Commitment to Community Building in Peterborough

Born and raised in Peterborough, like many, Bill Lockington left for university and a few years in the big city. Just a couple of years into his law career, an opportunity to take over the practice of a retiring lawyer brought Bill and his wife Gail back home. In the ensuing decades, the Lockington’s raised three children together and have enjoyed what Bill describes as, “a very good life.” A founding partner of LLF Lawyers, Bill has long been known around his hometown as a committed community builder.

“I owe it to my mother and father for introducing me to volunteerism,” he says. “By the time I got to high school I was a volunteer with the Key Club, which was a junior Kiwanis. I eventually became the governor of the Key Clubs of eastern Canada. That was my first role in volunteer leadership.”

Since that early experience, Bill served on the boards of the Canadian Canoe Museum, Hospice Peterborough, the Greater Peterborough Innovation Cluster, the Art School of Peterborough, YMCA Peterborough, YMCA Canada, to name a few. He is also a past Board Chair of Community Foundations of Canada and the founding Chair of the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough.

Bill has stayed with the Foundation some 14 years (now as an active Honorary Director) he says jokingly, “because they haven’t kicked me out yet!” will help us keep our service strong well into the future. The Community Foundation is the perfect partner to help us achieve our goals. They help take the stress of administering an endowment off our plate so we can stay focused on doing the work we’re meant to be doing.”

Telecare is always in need of caring volunteers and financial support. Interested volunteers can apply here. Donations to the Telecare Peterborough Fund will help cover the costs of day-to-day operations and will give its volunteer staff the time and space needed to plan for the future of this vital service.

In truth, the Foundation is fortunate to benefit from Bill’s expertise and generosity. Find out why he thinks the Foundation is vital to the long-term health of Peterborough and what he thinks we should do more of by hitting the link below.
