The Ferne Cristall English Language Learner (ELL) Fund was created by colleagues and community members upon the retirement of Ferne Cristall from her position as ELL teacher. Countless students’ and families’ lives in the Peterborough area have been profoundly touched by Ferne’s unwavering efforts to assist refugee and immigrant families.
During her teaching career, Ferne sought funding for an ELL program; she bolstered the confidence of every student through language training; she assisted in course choices and understanding curriculum material, tests and exams, college and university applications; and she supported families through collecting necessities, arranging for translators, navigating local agencies and organizing community get-togethers. Her diligence, soft-spoken nature and insight ensured that students had her tireless support through the toughest and the best of times.
The Fund provides a scholarship to an English language learner graduating from a Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board high school. This student has held tight to their deep desire to learn and continue schooling despite facing challenges like discrimination, trauma, mental or physical health issues, economic hardship or intense feelings of cultural displacement.
