Picture a state-of-the-art kitchen that serves as ‘the heart of the home.’ This is the concept that guided development of the Mount Food Centre, including The Fulcrum Café, bakery and professional kitchen. Funded in part by a $300,000 donation from the Community Foundation in 2018, the Food Centre nourishes body and soul. It’s a space at the Mount Community Centre where people gather to share stories, traditions, recipes, skills and talents. Where the stigma surrounding poverty and ability is broken down and where meaningful conversations unfold as people learn from one another.
Walk through its doors and you might see a group of tenants preparing a shared meal, friends enjoying a safe and comfortable space to catch up over coffee, a local food entrepreneur sampling new offerings, hot meals being prepped for delivery to seniors and adults with physical challenges or young people receiving food service training.
It’s a space where you hear the sound of laughter, enjoy the scent of fresh-baked bread and feel a sense of connection. It’s a space where food is created with care, shared with compassion and where learning and innovation flourish. It’s a space where people feel nourished, loved and accepted, inviting a sense of belonging for anyone who walks through its doors.
